QVC, which means: Quality, Value, and Convenience; pays their hosts’ salaries according to their ability to sell. They push tons of products, and the super-seller hosts rake in the most money. If the host comes from a hot market like New York City, they can command somewhere in the neighborhood of $80,000 per year, and that was 10 years ago. Today, a QVC host could make well into the six-figure income. The salary can vary based on the product, the time slot, the product category, and the price of the product.
QVC supports 25 program hosts that come from various different backgrounds and work 3 to 4 hours shifts on-air, and 4 to 5 days a week. The hosts prepare for their on-air time by conducting their own research like traveling around the globe to learn about the products they will be selling, and they above all do not use scripts, cue cards or teleprompters. Hosts will appear before millions of viewers and extemporaneously effuse with the camera about everything from zinnia-petal earrings to country style crab cakes. It’s very difficult to find a host that can really talk to the camera as if it was their dearest friends. But, on a network that can move tens of thousands of dollars of merchandise a minute, the host plays a crucial role, part M.C., part cheerleader for a celebrity guest, part employee executing the orders of producers to end a slow-selling item’s airtime with grace and tack, and part fantasy friend to the viewers, coaxing them to call. It’s a rare skill-set and an industry source (a former host on rival HSN) says QVC is willing to compensate their hosts for that rare skill-set extremely well, up to $500,000 per year. But, QVC officials will not say how much they pay their hosts.
QVC was founded in 1986 and employees over 17,000 people around the world. They broadcast live, 24 hours a day, 364 days a year. The show presents more than 1,150 products in a week and 288 of those products are new for the QVC customer. It’s headquartered in West Chester, Pennsylvania and sits on 84 acres of land, which is about the size of 15 football fields.
